A Shelf Above the Rest

Happy Sunday! We are up bright and early to paint! Today we (when I say we, I mean my husband) will get started on the guest bedroom/our son’s playroom. It is our 4th bedroom and it plays a double role. I am just finishing up the headboard for the bed we plan to use for that space. I cannot wait to reveal the room when it is complete! That will be a post for another day.

Today’s post is about a shelf. Yes, just one shelf. If you didn’t already know, I am a big fan of shelves. I just love them! Ok, well maybe this post isn’t just about the shelf, but where I decided to place it is the actual focus.

Typically you’d put a shelf up above, right? Above the bed, above the couch, above the washer and dryer. I think we can all agree that ‘above’ is the key word here. I stuck to the common theme with my shelf placement, but I really feel like I have added a ton of character to our home by placing this particular shelf above a…
dun dun dun… doorway!

I chose to decorate above the door that leads into our master bedroom for a couple reasons. One reason was that I wanted to keep the décor line going from the top of our kitchen cabinets to the breakfast nook. The small nook to our bedroom breaks up that line, and it just looked so bare!

Here is a wide shot to show how the doorway sets right in between two other decorated spaces:

You can imagine how bare that area looked before the shelf was there!

Another reason was that I wanted to “mark our territory” so to speak. The shelf display kind of acts as a sign that tells people our room is just beyond the door.

I decorated the shelf with three pieces that soley focus on my husband and I. There is a framed photograph from our wedding day on the shelf, a framed piece of burlap embroidered with details of our marriage, and a framed scripture about love. I think these three pieces clearly represent us.

I try to always decorate in threes. One of these days I’ll tell you more about that.

You can add interest to your home by putting your décor in unexpected places. Or using unexpected items to decorate with. That is part of the fun of decorating and designing. You don’t really need to follow rules. Well, I guess there are some rules you should follow! Just do what you think looks good. Then ask your friends if you’re really not sure. (Hehe)

Putting a shelf above a door can also be used as a space saver. It can provide organization in addition to beautifying your home. Are you starting to see why I have a slight obsession with shelves? I’d love to see how you have used a shelf differently in your home, or even another décor item used in a not so typical way! Leave your comments and photos below.

That’s all for now. Have a happy day!
